What is happening to me?

I am becoming an old woman. Today I have decided to borrow books from the library about canning and planting flowers. When the heck did this happen? I used to be cool. I feel like six months from now I will be in a big fluffy hat, on my hands and knees, planting stuff. Yikes.

Hey being able to do that kind of stuff is cool. It is all in how you perceive it. You are definitely not old. Just in a new phase in your life. We all like to learn new things.

I don't think you have to worry. Six months from now is January/February. You probably won't be doing much planting then. You might be knitting in your rocking chair or something.

Nothing wrong with knitting either. I crochet a lot. I give the projects to my friends and family as gifts. They are relatively cheap and it helps calm me.

Canning Rocks!!!

The best way to get started (if you don't know how) is to buy a Kerr or Ball canning book. Its basically a book of recepies that has how to's. Its about the size of a magazine.

You can usually find them at WalMart or the grocery store near the canning supplies.

Canning only saves you money if you can get the food for free or cheap. For example - I've gone to the farmers market and asked for 'canning tomatoes'. These are bruised, odd shapped, or over ripe tomatoes. I've gotten a huge box (a bushel or so) for $10. Made a bunch of salsa and speghetti sauce.

At the farmers market, I've bought a few overripe flats of strawberries for $3. Made lots of jelly.

I've stopped at a house up the street that had a fruit tree and asked if I could pick a few sacks.

I've gotten green tomatoes from hipchicks grandpa right before a freeze, then let them rippen.

A house up the street had a sign that said "Free plums" - we stopped and picked about 1/2 bushel.

I put an add in the paper at work to ask for someone that had a fruit tree. Then I gave them some jelly.

I have raspberry bushes and an apple tree. I've made jelly and applesauce.

If you have to buy stuff at the store full price, you're not going to save any money - however, you can still do it.

I would start with simple jelly. Go buy some pectin and get the instructions out of the box. That will tell you how to do it. All you need is a few big pots, some jars, and new lids.

There is wierd shit you can can. Like fish, meats, chicken, etc.

as much as i tease joel about his canning abilitiies it's great to always have yummy homemade jelly around the house. and as blue has already pointed out...all that kind of stuff makes great great gifts that peple usually appreciate more than something you can buy at the store.

canning is sexy!

ok...not canning fish and meat, but jellies, applesause, veggies, etc is!

besides self-sufficiency is always a great thing! did i say that already?

And ya know if there is ever some great catastrophe like say a terrible tornado or hurricane or flooding. You will still have great food/skills to be able to take care of people. That is the best feeling in the world.

I agree. If an F5 rips through the midwest, we're without power, water, sanitition for two or three weeks, the national guard can't get water to us (because there are none of them left in the United States)- my family will be able to make it on raspberry plumb jelly!!!

Speaking of canning - did I ever tell you about the time Merk was about 2. I was canning something and she was playing with my jar grabber. I took it from her to take some jars out of the boiling water, then I handed it back to her by the business end. It left a mark on her hand in the shape of the jar grabber.

Then there was the time I spent a weekend making applesauce from the apples on my tree. I thought they were green apples - my belly found out later that the tree produces red apples.

Then there was the time that Crystals step grandpa (I think) gave me a HUGE mess of green tomatoes. I put them in the basement layered in newspaper and waited for them to rippen. They would start to rippen, turn yellow, then turn brown and rot. Everyone of them. I never got a single tomatoe to rippen. They all just turned yellow. I told him about it and he just started laughing. Who knew there were yellow tomatoes!?!?
